EDWARD JENNER

“I am not surprised that men are not grateful to me; but I wonder that they are not grateful to God for the good which he has made me the instrument of conveying to my fellow creatures.”

EDWARD JENNER

Edward Jenner created the world’s first vaccine. In Jenner’s day, smallpox killed up to 20 percent of the population. Jenner’s smallpox vaccine eventually wiped out this disease. His research led to the development of more vaccines against disease. Currently around 9 million lives per year are saved because of vaccines. Jenner is often credited with saving more human lives than any other single person in history.

CENTERED ON CHRIST

Jenner was a devoted Jesus-follower who read his Bible regularly. He believed that God “who formed all things out of nothing still wields and guides the machinery of his mighty creation.” He advocated religious education for children, believing that “children intent on the wonders of nature could scarcely help but realize the power of the Creator and, learning to admire Him more and more, be thus drawn to respect His laws, to acknowledge His supremacy and to devote themselves to bringing about the fulfilment of His will in this world to the fullest extent in their power.”

Days before his death, Jenner said to a friend, “I am not surprised that men are not grateful to me; but I wonder that they are not grateful to God for the good which he has made me the instrument of conveying to my fellow creatures.”
