OXFORD  UNIVERSITY

Oxford University is one of the earliest seed institutions that helped plant our modern-day universities. Teaching there began as early as 1096, and the university grew rapidly from 1167.

Oxford was founded by Christians as an offshoot of the cathedral school. The motto of Oxford, which still exists today, states, “The Lord is my light” (Domminaus Tio Illumea in Latin). This is a quote from the Christian Bible. (“The Lord is my light and salvation.” (Psalm 27:1)) Oxford’s crest includes three crowns, representing God the Father, God the Son (Jesus), and God the Holy Spirit.

Oxford’s Christian heritage was carried on to Cambridge University, another prestigious seed university that was founded by Oxford Christian scholars.
