Friederich Frobel, a German educator, created the concept of “kindergarten,” revolutionizing modern education. Frobel believed that understanding comes from engaging with the world. Thus he developed a system of early education that combined learning through self-activity and creativity, or play. He thought play was a way for children to gain awareness of their place in the world.
Frobel developed educational toys and games to teach young children within the family. This led him to then provide special centers for the care and development of children outside the home. Frobel called these centers “kinder” (children’s) “garten” (garden).

Frobel was a sincere Christian whose strong faith greatly influenced his educational model. He sought and encouraged unity in all things, believing that fulfillment comes in unifying the productivity and creativity of humans in harmony with God and the world.
