JOHN MONTEITH
JOHN MONTEITH
John Monteith, a Presbyterian pastor, was an outspoken and zealous opponent of slavery who aided in the expansion of the Underground Railroad. Monteith was known for helping slaves escape even through his own home. He led many escaping slaves to the shores of Lake Erie and helped them board a boat to Canada.
Reverend Monteith also founded the University of Michigan, where he served as president and a professor alongside Father Gabriel Richard, a Catholic priest.

Monteith was an active Christian pastor who was very passionate about his beliefs. Monteith was dedicated to sharing the gospel message with those who needed to hear it. In 1816, Monteith became a licensed Presbyterian missionary, and in 1817 he was fully ordained in the Presbyterian church. Monteith founded the first Protestant church and Presbyterian church in the state of Michigan.
